This time of year, it’s difficult to avoid seeing (or using) cliché and over-used holiday phrases in your messaging. At one time, these phrases may have been clever, but because of social media, they seem to make their way into every holiday post and promotion.
We’re not going to sit here and criticize anyone for starting a post or blog with “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,” because we’ve probably done it too. But it’s still important to be intentional when coming up with content for your posts. Here are some phrases we’ve seen one time too many this holiday season:
• ‘Tis the season…
• It’s the most wonderful time of the year
• I’m dreaming of…
• It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
• Have you been ‘naughty or nice’ this year?
• Christmas came early for…
• Don’t be a Grinch this Christmas
• Bah Humbug
• All (fill in the blank) wants for Christmas is….
• Get in the holiday spirit
Sure, these phrases may be cute and show that you’re willing to have some fun with your social media content. But remember that viewers filter through hundreds of posts during the holidays, and most likely, someone else has already started their post with “’Tis the season…”. Try your best to stand out by using original messaging. Even starting with something simple like “It’s Christmas time” or “The holidays are here” might be better than repurposing a cheesy Christmas song.
